Bangladesh produces approximately 70,000 tons of Tiger shrimp for export with export earnings of 550 million dollars annually. The majority of production is produced by small farmers. The farmers depend on shrimp hatcheries to produce 6 to 10 billion post larvae for stocking farmer’s ponds. Traditionally, hatcheries have depended on wild broodstock that frequently carry diseases to produce these larvae. These diseases are often passed on to farmers from the hatcheries and limit production on shrimp farms. In addition, the fishing of wild broodstock to support the farm industry is creating pressure on the wild shrimp population. To address these barriers to shrimp farmers' production, Hawaii-based Moana Technologies, with support from Feed the Future Partnering for Innovation, has started shipping Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) breeding stock to MKA Hatchery in Bangladesh.
